Disability

The company supports the people with disabilities by creating a favorable environment with enhanced infrastructure such as accessible parking spaces, loan wheelchairs, and hearing loops (“Ikea Store,” n.d.). However, IKEA still faces some issues regarding the treatment of the disabilities within their stores. Notably, workers and customers with disabilities often become victims of discrimination at the workplace. For instance, in 2017, IKEA staff asked a disabled customer to pay a fee for the assistance to retrieve a particular product (“Ikea tells Disabled Shopper: Pay £10 for Help,” 2017). Such instances may demoralize the company’s staff with disabilities, negatively affecting their productivity. Moreover, increased discrimination will destroy the company’s public image and contribute towards its downfall. Therefore, the firm should highly sensitize its employees about the need to support persons with disabilities, including co-workers and customers. It should also intensify its efforts in providing support for these people because they require specialized attention to realize their potentials.

Marriage

No discrimination based on marital status is part of the essential aspects identifiable in IKEA’s diversity principles, yet the negative cases still occur. Certainly, the job market consists of professionals who are married and unmarried. Over the years, IKEA has demonstrated its commitment to support all workers and customers irrespective of their marital status. For instance, once a couple got married at the facility, which confirms the company’s care for families (Cornish, 2017). However, single staff members tend to be discriminated by receiving a lesser benefit package than the married ones (DePaulo 2016). The variation in benefits between the married and unmarried workers is due to the laws and workplace practices that highly rely on the nuclear family model (DePaulo 2016). Such differences may profoundly affect the relationship of workers, hindering their collective efforts towards achieving the company’s goals.
