What’s Wrong With Public Education in Alabama?
Over the years, Alabama has demonstrated a poor quality level of education as ranked by various assessment reports. For instance, a recent study by WalletHub that examined the American states’ public school systems ranked Alabama among the bottom ten (Seale). The study that considered twenty-five measures of quality and safety among the 50 states ranked Alabama 43rd in quality as well as 45th in safety (Seale). In this regard, it is critical to explore the reasons for the poor standard and safety education in Alabama, including poor financing and poor instructor quality.
Poor education financing is the major problem contributing to Alabama’s current unattractive academic performance. Public education that highly depends on the government funding is highly affected when efforts to increase its budget are blocked by several agencies across the state (”Extra: What’s Wrong with Alabama?”). As such, the government’s insufficient funds have resulted in low funding per student and hence affecting the quality of education that they receive. This explains why Alabama schools record low scores in key subjects such as math and reading.
Notably, Alabama’s substandard education is also contributed by poor instructor quality. The productivity caliber of instructors is among the most vital factors that influence the performance of learners. In Alabama, teachers are overworked and underpaid, factors that negatively affect their productivity (Seale). Besides, the state does not prioritize recruitment and retention of strong teachers due to low funding. The less valuation of the teaching profession as indicated by poor compensation of instructors contributes to the poor quality education in the state.
Overall, Alabama is characterized by substandard education as indicated by poor rankings in assessment reports. Such performance is as a result of poor funding and instructor quality in the state. Therefore, it is necessary for the relevant authorities to increase resource allocation to the education sector for improvement in performance.
