Leadership in Clinical Practice
Leadership is a vital element in clinical practice, especially concerning service delivery to patients. As a DNP-prepared nurse executing duties in a new leadership position within a clinical setting, I will incorporate various processes such as electronic heath record (EHR) with the aim of improving seeing of patients and communication within the healthcare team.
If the position is within a magnet acute-care facility situated in a busy metropolitan locality, then there are specific elements I will have to consider. First, the fact that the hospital should deliver high-quality services due to its status requires effectiveness in operations. The incorporation of an electronic health record system in the facility will easy traceability of the expected high number of patients (Nguyen, Bellucci, & Nguyen, 2014). I will orient the nurses to the system and commence a training program to enlighten them on its functioning. Consequently, due to the high rate of flow of patients, I will add more professionals, including nurses and technician to aid in implementing the system. Moreover, I will incorporate technology to enhance communication within the healthcare facility. The new communication system will connect all departments within the hospital, thereby enhancing communication and delivery of services (Tang et al., 2018). Finally, I will empower the healthcare team and encourage them to share their ideas directly to me on the possible ways to improve service delivery.
My practice will only incur a few changes, in the case the facility was within a rural region. In this region, I will not be required to add more personnel when implementing the electronic health record system because of the reduced number of patients. However, I will have to establish the communication system and encourage sharing of ideas as in the case of the metropolitan facility, as it is vital in both settings.
I believe that the initiation of such changes to my new clinical facility will enable me to demonstrate effective leadership in the facility. The electronic health records and an effective communication system will influence the quality of services positively. In that regard, I could have made a change to the entire community.
