Mass surveillance has become a controversial issue, especially with the rise of digital technologies that allow governments and corporations to collect, store, and analyze vast amounts of data. Proponents argue that mass surveillance is essential for national security, helping to prevent terrorism and crime by monitoring suspicious activities (Clarke, 2015). However, critics raise ethical concerns about privacy rights, government overreach, and the potential for abuse.

One of the main ethical dilemmas of mass surveillance is the violation of individual privacy. The right to privacy is enshrined in many democratic constitutions, and mass data collection without consent challenges this fundamental right. Edward Snowden’s revelations about the NSA’s surveillance programs in 2013 highlighted the extent to which governments monitor citizens without their knowledge (Greenwald, 2014). This has led to debates about whether such practices are justifiable in a democratic society.

Additionally, mass surveillance can result in discriminatory practices, as minority groups may be disproportionately targeted by surveillance technologies. The use of facial recognition software, for instance, has been criticized for being biased against people of color, raising concerns about racial profiling (O’Neil, 2016). These ethical concerns call for a careful reevaluation of the balance between security and privacy, ensuring that surveillance practices respect human rights and operate under transparent regulations.
